Whats it like to travel or live in Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake) area of Virginia anyway

I traveled there last summer. I'd think it would be wonderful to live there, but personally I'd probably prefer living there in the slower off-season. It was beautiful to vacation there, though. Best part of the vacation, and I'd do it again.

I live in virginia and it's crowded alot but virginia beach if you see the beach ity is beautiful at sunset

Within Chesepeake, there is a nice little community called Great Bridge. It has everything you will need to feel at home, without feeling "boxed in", by a fast paced life. The Albermarle & Chesapeake Canal, part of the Atlantic Inter Coastal Waterway offers a very nice family oriented park, in Great Bridge, where you can watch boats of all sizes move thru the locks. A short drive in any direction will take you to a shopping center (Greenbriar, has all of the major stores) and fine dining. Beaches are close enough for a day trip to Virginia Beach, as well as North Carolina. The school system is one of the best in the State and Chesapeake has a good hospital. The library system is state of the art and has a wonderful children's program. From Chesapeake to the mountains (Skyline Drive), is approximately 4 hours, perfect for a week-end get-a-way. If you're planning to buy a house, check out the Brandermill and Etheridge Meadows areas. You should spend a few days visiting the different areas, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake, before you make a final decision. I'm sure a realtor would be happy to show you around and give you some good advice

About What is the boardwalk like in Virginia Beach
What is the boardwalk like in Virginia Beach?
I've been to a few east coast beaches and the boardwalks are slighty different. Is there a lot of shopping and dining right on the boardwalk? How about activities for children? Is everything pretty much within walking distance or is there car travel needed to enjoy Virginia Beach?

Very little of anything is on the actual boardwalk. Most of the shops are on Atlantic Avenue, one block inland from the boardwalk. You will definitely need a car, as many of the attractions are located on General Booth Blvd. which runs south from the Oceanfront area. Virginia Beach is a very large city covering nearly 500 sq. miles and a population of over 433,000 making it more populated than Miami, Minneapolis, and St. Louis.

I was there a few years ago. There was a nice boardwalk along the beach but it was just a boardwalk. All of the shopping/dining stuff was along that first road that borders the beach (maybe 1/2 block in from the beach). It was easy to walk to a lot of things, and they also have a trolley system that was either free or really cheap. We even accidentally got on one that traveled way inland to a mall. You won't need a car. My son was about 5 when we went and most of our "activities" included days on the beach or at the pool, going out to eat and for ice cream, and one evening we played miniature golf. There is probably more available, but that was enough for us

About What are some nice beaches similar to Virginia Beach
What are some nice beaches similar to Virginia Beach?
my family went to virginia beach for 1 week last year and we loved it. we live in northern new jersey. the farthest south we will travel is virginia. the farthest is Massachusetts. what are some nice beaches that are similar to VB? we wont hotel-like resorts. we went to cape may but didnt like it--we like places with big hotels at the boardwalk as opposed to houses.

I grew up on Manasquan Beach, NJ and am very partial to it. Similar to Virginia Beach, I would say, would be Atlantic City and Ocean City, although Virginia Beach is tops in my mind. Further south I like Myrtle Beach and Atlantic Beach, FL, or any of those south of Jacksonville. Of course Malaga, Spain; Tangier, Morocco; and Santa Monica, CA are REALLY nice. As a retired Navy CPO I have seen them all.

Check out Chix Beach about, oh, 15 miles or so north from the Virginia Beach Resort area. Compared to the resort, you'll practically have the place to yourself
